What is Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new strain of coronavirus which may cause illness in animals or humans.  In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. First identified in a cluster with pneumonia symptoms in Wuhan city, Hubei province of China. On 11 March 2020, the WHO publicly characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

  • sore throat,
  • shortness of breath
  • coughing
  • Fever (at least 38 degrees Celsius)

The incubation period for this infection is 4 to 7 days (up to 14 days in some early).

How to prevent your child and your family?

  • Wash hands with soap and water for 40 sec or use hand sanitizers for 20 sec.
  • When they coughing and sneezing let them use inside of the elbow
  • Or use tissue paper when sneezing and throw immediately in the trash
  • Avoid close contact and keep distance of 1.5 meter
  • Stay away from people with colds or other symptoms

Does my child with diabetes type 1 have high risk to get infected with coronavirus (COVID-19)?

The studies show that most people who become seriously ill form corona are adult and often have multiple conditions. So far there are no children with diabetes infected by coronavirus COVID-19.

If you or your child have any symptom of a respiratory infection and one of you have traveled to any country with a widespread outbreak of COVID-19, we advise you to do the following:

  • Call immediately 937
  • Follow the doctor’s instructions, and if you were advised to self-isolate, please avoid any direct contact with people.
  • Don’t come to clinic and inform the Diabeter clinic by the phone the condition of your child and follow the instruction of the Diabeter team.

What should you do in terms of diabetes management if your child get sick?

  • Keep your child hydrated
  • Monitor blood glucose
  • Monitor temperature
  • Monitor ketone
  • Upload the device and call Diabeter clinic
  • Follow the recommendations of the Diabeter team
