Insulin production out of order

Having type 1 diabetes means that the insulin production is out of order. This is being caused by a failure in the immunological defence mechanism. For unknown reasons, cells from this defence mechanism attack the beta cells in the pancreas and cause damage. The result of this is that the body has insufficient means to produce insulin for its own use. The insulin deficit causes the typical complaints that go with diabetes: having to urinate often, wanting to drink much, losing weight and energy. In the blood, high blood sugar levels can be measured.

Bad luck…

Anyone can fall victim to type 1 diabetes and often the illness occurs at a young age. This has nothing to do with having a less healthy lifestyle, like is the case with type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs less than type 2, but has a much bigger impact on the patients’ life and the lives of those around him.

6000 children with type 1 diabetes

A 100,000 people in The Netherlands are estimated to have type 1 diabetes, including 6.000 children between 0 and 18 years. Diabeter has 1,600 children and young adults under treatment. Much research is being conducted about why type 1 diabetes occurs and why the number of children with this disease increases. Diabeter plays an active role in scientific research. We want to do more than just provide diabetes care, we also want to make diabetes care better!
